A Usfans order to Berlin from warehouse to Packstation: German import VAT, the Zoll and the lines that avoid a trip to the customs office

Last updated .

Quick answer: A Usfans parcel to Berlin pays German import VAT, Einfuhrumsatzsteuer, at 19% (7% for books and a few other goods) and, since 1 July 2026, a €3 EU duty per item category if it's worth up to €150. If those charges weren't settled before arrival, the carrier clears the parcel for a fee or the Zoll asks you to collect it at the customs office. Duties-paid DHL lines avoid both and are listed at about five to ten days.

Germany on the Usfans map

Germany is Usfans' fourth-largest search market, behind Spain, France and the US. There's no German interface, so Berlin buyers use the English site, but the lines to Germany are the same well-trodden routes that serve the rest of the EU, including duties-paid DHL. The part that confuses most first-time buyers is German customs: the Einfuhrumsatzsteuer, the new EU duty, and the dreaded letter from the Zollamt.

Lines to Germany are routine; the customs step is what needs planning.

Import VAT and the €3 duty

Every parcel from outside the EU pays import VAT from the first euro. In Germany that's 19% on the goods and shipping, or 7% for books and a few other reduced-rate goods. Since 1 July 2026, parcels worth up to €150 also pay a flat EU customs duty of €3 for each different item category. Above €150, normal duty rates by product apply instead.

An EU handling fee of €2 per item is also due to start by November 2026. Our shipping estimator lets you add these to your own numbers.

Zollamt or doorstep: how clearance works

Whether you ever see a customs office depends on whether the taxes were paid before the parcel arrived. On duties-paid lines, the shipper settles VAT and duty in advance and the parcel goes straight to delivery. On other lines, the carrier usually clears the parcel for you, pays the charges and asks you to reimburse them plus a handling fee before delivery. If it can't, the Zoll sends a notice and you collect the parcel at the customs office with ID, proof of payment and a description of the contents. The Zoll may open the parcel; goods that infringe a trademark are detained and usually destroyed.

  • Duties-paid line: no extra steps, no fee at the door.
  • Carrier clearance: VAT and duty plus the carrier's handling fee, paid online.
  • Zollamt pickup: a trip to the office with proof of what you paid.

Pay taxes upfront and you skip both the fee and the trip.

Lines to Germany

An independent directory lists Usfans DHL lines to Germany with duties paid, at about five to ten days after departure. Economy lines cost less per kilo but take weeks and may leave customs to the carrier. Allow about a week before shipping for items to reach the warehouse and be photographed. The Usfans shipping guide explains how to read each line's description.

Packstation and delivery in Berlin

Lines that hand over to DHL in Germany can usually deliver to a Packstation or a Postfiliale, which helps in Berlin's many apartment blocks. Use your Postnummer in the address, exactly as DHL requires. Couriers that need a signature may not deliver to a Packstation, so check the line before using one. Otherwise, include your name as it appears on the doorbell, and a German mobile number with the +49 prefix.
